Am looking for a Contessa 26 (first boat) and would much appreciate any comments/opinions on Contessa 26 Maclan vs. Rogers. Thanks.

Invicta

Before settling on a Contessa 26, consider an Invicta 26. Designed by van de Stadt along Folkboat lines and very similar in hull form to the Contessa but slightly deeper bodied, slightly beamier and with a break in the coachroof which gives signicantly better headroom. In my view she is a better, all round boat

If your open to alternative suggestions then buy a Sadler 26, you just cannot go wrong.

Re: Invicta

Same age or younger, I think. Both good boats, but I have extensive personal experience of the Invicta and Contessa but only a passing acquaintance with the other two.

I bought a CO26 at the back end of last years season.. I also looked at the Invicta.. I bought the CO26 as it was the best boat (in terms of condition) closest to me. Look at anything with approx same proportions as there aren't too many of either..

I also looked at an MG30, a Dutch Steel boat about 29ft, 2 Invictas and 5 Co26s, an unknown westerly of about 28 ft, a cutlass, 2 Elizabethans one 29 and one 30.. and another Van de Stadt called a pioner.

I spent a fortune in petrol but I think it was worth keeping the open mind.

A key point...

At this age condition of the yacht is everything. It pays not to get too fixated on a specific design and instead buy a tidy boat from a doting owner.

Well it seems that we aren't really answering your question - which appears to be which of the builders is possibly the better. Have to confess I wasn't aware that there were two but am not overly familiar with the boat.

I presume that because Jeremy Rodgers has won the RTI race in a Co 26 that his must be better - but surely at that age it is the condition and history of the boat that will be the overiding factor.

What are your preferences at this point?

For what it is worth, don't be taken in by the term 'lightly used'. It is simply a euphemism for neglected. I bought my Moody 27 a year ago, and on the face of it, she seemed lovely, and very 'lightly used'. in fact the boat hadn't left her berth for about 5years, and I have had loads to do at not inconsiderable expense. Buy something that has been used and enjoyed, and especially updated. Also don't economise on your surveyor.

oh and another boat to look it is the Halcyon 27 (not to be confused with the Halcyon Clipper)..

Re the builder - Jeremy Rogers is still active and can advise on CO26 stuff.. where is Marcon???
