Contessa 26 vs Invicta 26

Hi Rob fae Stornaway!

Yeah there was a Vega at my old club in Shetland... Thats also where CO26 'Piper' ended up too...

Jon

Hi! We have two Vegas and two Co26 up here, one Co32 and a twister as well. When I stated looking for a boat I was partially influenced by the choices others had made: I liked the idea of a beamy quarter-ton type of boat (Ecume, Ethygene, etc) but nobody around here has that sort of boat... herd mentality perhaps... so ended up buying one of the local boats instead.

Hi Fascadale.

It's all on hold at the minute - got committed to refitting my current boat.

In terms of an 'on paper' descision, I'm swayed towards the Halcyon - just for a few personal and aesthetic reasons really.

It seems a little larger, the head room is good (I'm 6 ft) and I like the companion arrangement better than the CO26/Invicta dome to be honest. Plus they seem happier drying out alongside than the Cutlass.

The Vega seems to fit the bill on paper but she doesnt get me that excited aestheticly.

But it will depend on what's around when the time comes - as per some earlier comments - Im not tying myself too specifically, the right boat in the right condition at the right price.

Drying out?

Where?

Looks like it. In fact I can't believe I didn't spot that myself. I only went and got flippin married on the pier there last year!!

Nice pic Fascadale,
Just the sort of thing I'd like to do...
Hyskeir looks pretty darn cute there!

Can you hold a party on the foredeck though?
I think the Cutlass 27 would fall on its nose if you werent careful....

Indeed, that very pier! Happy memories. We hope to sail down there every year for our anniversary.

What a nice idea.

I had a 10 out of 10 shower at the Rodel Hotel, a good meal, Wi-Fi and a decent pint so would highly recommend the place.

The entry in pilot book for the Sound of Shiant made me a bit apprehensive though. I came through it with the tide but into the wind. It wasn't too bad by Uisenish but looked a lot worse to seaward.

I have sailed both, nothing in them at all, however I see the Invicta as a prettier looking boat by far, ended up buying a Vega, far better than the rest in performance and accommodation, now sold, sadly.

I have been considering getting either an Invicta 26 or Vega and saw your post. It seems that the build quality of the Vega is superior to the Invicta but I think the Invicta is a much better looking boat, although I have found that they are very slow in light airs. How much faster is the Vega in F4 and above?

Have just sold my lovely old Invicta26 after 21 years of great sailing in her.
Numerous trips to Ireland and one to Northern Spain.
Worst weather we ever had was 60kt winds in Celtic Sea, Invicta behaved better than the crew.
Sailed like a dream in anything above the top end of a force 2, and won races in her against things like Super Seals and Fulmars.
Agreed slightly cramped below but no different in this to the Contessa, both are Folkboat derivatives.
Why did I sell? Long single keel was never ideal in our harbour and the opportunity of a nice bilge keeler came up.
Van de Stadt got it just about right when he designed the Invicta and Tyler’s did a great job of constructing a solid GRP boat.
Oh yes it has a self draining cockpit.
