Containers Adrift in the Channel?

I was walking along the beach to the west of Bognor Regis yesterday, a walk I do quite frequently, to find a large sea container had been washed ashore. It had obviously been there for a few weeks as it had taken quite a battering.

I don't recall reading about this at the time - does anyone know the story?

The fact this thing was bobbing around in the Channel for goodness knows how long is terrifying.

There was report of 60 containers lost by 'Lykes Liberator' off of Ushant about 2 weeks back.

With the strong westerlies we've had lately I suppose that's a possibility.

Anything good inside?

on sailing to the West Country last year there was a nav warning of a large chest freezer partially submerged floating about !

strange, I thought.

No, even the decent timber floor had been taken!!

Probably the same one I reported to Brixham CG, saw it a few miles off Sidmouth, tried to sink it but no way, far too much buoyancy, only about a quarter of it was in the water.

Crossing from Poole to Cherbourg last August I had a near miss with one mid-channel. I tried to report it via CH 16 but was out of range. I suspect that it is not a rare occurrence especially after heavy weather. I've marvelled many times at the container ships going out the Solent with containers stacked like dominoes on the edge of their decks

What if you find a container? I presume you can claim it, but how would you tow it ashore in a 10 metre sailing yacht? And then what do you do with it? How do you get it on shore, and how do you open it? And what if there's valuable stuff inside?
