I needed to remove some ancient contact adhesive from wood the other day and found that acetone on a rag was best. White spirit had no noticeable effect, likewise meths.

Top tip, do not try to remove contact adhesive from vinyl headlinings with acetone as it will remove the surface colouring faster than you can blink.
WD40 will remove glue from headlinings with no damage!

Really? In 2009, Wired published an article with the results of gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy tests on WD-40, showing that the principal components were C9 to C14 alkanes and mineral oil.

So what does it contain? The manufacturer says "less than 25% is mineral oil and the rest is similar, but not exactly the same as Stoddard Solvent, which is a brand of American white spirit. As white spirit formulation varies around the world, it would appear to be more than 50% what we call 'white spirit' or paraffin family of solvents.

It's essentially white spirit with a bit of light oil added. In olden times, it used to be different.

I have had success removing headlining glue with white spirit.
