Halfords would apper to have cut the prices of the camping stock they are 'outing' even more and the Freedom 400 DL - XL is a nice BIG bag for those of us who like our Fray Bentos pies - now at 17.67 a piece (bags not pies) 3 season rating. If you really really like your pies pick up a left and right zipper pair to wear........I admit I did.

They are also giving away a basic workbench at a fiver so I got one of those to stay down with the boat too...............

Re: Boil in the bag.

We had to pick up new sleeping bags in the spring, the last ones eneded up a mice food, the three season ones are ok in the spring and autumn, but the summer months were unbearable at times. Too hot for me, but then its down to personal choice. Good price though. They also had those stoves that take the gas cartridges on offer too. Good piece of kit thats always handy to make an impromtu brew or a bacon sarnie.

SWMBO and me have got a pair of flowery jobbies from a caravan shop, really warm and zip together a treat, perfect for shared use or excessive pie consumption.

Just as warm as my space age, 4 season, turbo charged (guzzle grub style) hiking thing, a lot heavier though and wouldn't pack into the tiny stuff sack. Probably wouldn't even go in a bin bag come to think of it.

Have you tried duvets? We used to use King Size duvets, the type with 2 layers that velcro together to make 13 TOG from an 8.5 TOG and a 4.5 TOG. You need covers for each and one goes as a base layer and the other on top, that way you can chose the thicker on on top early/late season and the thinner one in summer. They can be folded to fit a vee berth. We inherited some nice fitted duvets and fitted sheets on our current boat and even have an interior sprung mattress so even better! We still use the double duvet set up though in the guest cabin.

Duvets are definately the way forwards- makes it feel like a real bed and can be a lot cosier. As an addition, I had an old matress pad from Ikea which I cut to shape and stitched the edges- it makes the usual marine cushions very luxurious and adds warmth.
I'm looking forward to getting back into the stern cabin after a season in the saloon while baby took my place in bed. Baby will soon get fully padded forepeak- yipee.

as I haven't actually be allowed to sleep in the cabin yet........../forums/images/icons/smile.gif
Overnighting SWMBO insists on a duvet in the cabin, I sleep in a bag in the cockpit. As you can see we are not serious cruisers!
I like your ideas both of velcro to bring the 2 together and the dual function - all you need is to manufacture and market for the v berth; possibly with 2 different cover colours so you can pick from 4 combinations of colour and weight everytime you use it!
Anyone comment on the practicality of modifing old duvets to fit a v berth? Anyone know of any sewing services that would do the job? I might even get invited below occasionally/forums/images/icons/smile.gif/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

SWMBO & I got the fleece jobs from Compass this summer - really excellent for hot weather, light, good 'wicking'. Use normally, or open up and use as a blanket, or zip together for a cuddle! Cost about £25 each.

Loads of quilters about. Have a look on google or thru the yellow pages. Failing that try an "interiors" shop near you, they'll more than likely know of one locally.

2 different weights great, sew and cut down the duvet and cover to fit V berth.Remember to have the join at the big end!
Then use light one under and thick one over in Spring and Autumn & other way round in summer.
Fold and roll them together and retain with a suitcase strap.
Works atreat and makes bed making a 30 sec doddle!
Has worked really well for the last 5 yaers.

<hr width=100% size=1>Been there, done that, got the oily T shirt

Our current fitted ones are berth plus about 6" extra all round, previously they weren't fitted but just folded over to fit which gives a thicker bit at the foot end that is a bonus if it's cold. We also have hot water bottles for seriously cold nights!

There was a stand at SBS (Susan Hughes) that supply fitted stuff but pricey see

I think a friendly local seamstress to modify standard shop stuff would be a cheaper way to go.

Can you imagine the foot fight for duvet if it was tapered towards the foot end. Fout cold feet fighting for one foot of duvet. Is there a reason for not just getting a huge duvet and being toasty? Shaped matresses and sheets I can understand- shaped, shaped duvet possibly a bit difficult to share.

Have a word with WitchDoctor - they bought new Duvet set from Lidel's double stiched the "delta" shape with sewing machine first then simply cut between the stiches - easy. Very cheap and easy compared to buying the "offical" thing.

Well, thats how I understood they did it.

For my tupenny worth I simply use a king size duvet folded in half.

Regards, Jeff.

So why not just fight over space, and not the duvet as well?
