Considering an LM24 motorsailer

I'm contemplating a small motorsailer and the one that seems to meet the requirements is the LM24, or Cox 22 Master Mariner. I like a bit of sailing but not bothered about bashing to windward any more and these 2 apparently sail quite well off the wind, & I like engines. Are there any owners, past or present, with any info and pointers as to what to look out for?

The LM's I've seen have the original BUKH 10 or 20hp 80's engines still in them, are likely to go on for many years or do I need to consider re-engining?

Typically there aren't many around so it may have to be the waiting game.

Many thanks

Si

Also Swin Ranger (22')

My cousin had an LM. Brilliant design, sails better than you might think. You will find most of them still in the Baltic, so check Scandinavian web sites. (Cheaper there too).

For offshore sailing and the size you are looking for Have a look at this one http://yachts.apolloduck.co.uk/feature.phtml?id=475370

I've seen the Scandinavian ones advertised but I can see hassle & grief getting over there, viewing what looked like a good one, only to find it's a pooper & then getting it back here.

The Swin Ranger doesn't really "do it" for me and I would certainly entertain a Colvic Watson 23, but unfortunately the wheel house on that one looks like greenhouse stuck on top.

Thanks for you help so far.

I don't know whereabouts you are, but I was talking to a chap at Bradwell Marina just a couple of weeks ago.

He's very keen to sell his LM24. He's had it for several years, and is now giving up after a long, varied, life of sailing adventures.

Let me know if you'd like me to get his contact details.

Thanks Neal, I'm only a little way up the coast from Bradwell in Holland-on-Sea & sail out of Walton.

If it's convenient to get his details that would be great.
Many thanks

Hi Simon.

No problem: I'll be going to Bradwell this afternoon. If he's around, I'll get his phone number or email address. If not, I'll leave him a note to contact me.

A heads up from the home of LM.

Apart from at start of making furniture (1940) and GRP campervans their main production has been motorsailers from 16' to 32'. Some models more MOTOR and others more SAILER. Some actually sold without mast.

Nowadays the factory makes wind mill wings of impressive diemensions. Production to my knowledge is moved out from Denmark.

If interested the selection of LM's over here is quite large.

Local version of gumtree has 38 for sale, 24' asking from some £6.000

I have just reluctantly sold a 23.6 Colvic Watson, The wheelhouses which were supplied and fitted new are a lot better than the one shown in the photo. If I was to buy another old boat (mine was 32) it would have to have Bilge Keels and have been Re-Engined.
