Conran-designed Sealine?

Is it just me, or does it seem a little strange to lay staff off, pull out of ExCeL, and then announce that the new flagship boat has been designed by Studio Conran and is being launched at an exhibition at the Design Museum?

Doesn't seem strange at all to me. Sealine are laying off people to cut production costs, not because they're giving up selling boats. The current T series styling is awful, and I can't believe they've sold many, so desperately needs changing for something that sells.

Sealine don't really have a brand image in the bigger boats, which means they can take bigger risks 'cos they've got less to lose. Rodman have done the same with the "Muse" range, but sounds like Sealine are trying to go one step further with a designer branded boat. It may go down well with Russian and Arab buyers?
 
Hmmm. Nick's comments make sense - they still gotta sell boats.

It's still called a T60 summink, so methinks it is the same mouldings with a big, mostly interior, makeover by Conran. That should be a big improvement because the current T60 insides are bad (they still have the painted bus handles denounced on this forum) but part of the T60 problem is the horrid shape of the GRP mouldings, so I'm not expecting to be impressed by the new model. Would love to be proved wrong though and find it's a completely new boat. which would be lousy timing for me becuase i just paid deposit on a 60er flybridge last week...!
 
They still gotta sell boats, but are only making two models at the factory at the moment,, so I hear. And I can't believe that getting Conran to do some designs to resurrect a horrid 60-footer was cheap (not if the price of my kitchen table is anything to go by).

To me it smacks of desperation — eeek, it's the credit crunch and the only people doing well are those selling big boats...instead of quietly letting the T60 slip into oblivion, let's get a Big Name to give it a makeover and see if we can flog a couple that way.

Aprilia tried it a while back with the Moto 6.5, a Philippe Starck designed supermoto, and that was a dismal failure. But a Conran designed boat should be interesting, anbd I'm looking forward to seeing it. Can't wait to see the new Llewelyn-Bowen designed Fairlines, as well.
 
Very interesting ......... Conran, I believe carried out the Interior Design for the Range Rover. Steve Coultate Sealines MD's was at Land Rover. Bit of a kick in the nuts for the inhouse Design Team though specially following all the hype about in house design expertise etc in the latest Sealine Magazine.
 
So it is a makeover of the current T60, not an all-new boat? Jeeze. Paying Conran to tart it up is just good money after bad. Much as I'd like Sealine to do better there's no escaping the fact it's a terrible basic design.

Which are the only 2 models they're making? Are you saying the T50/60 line is pretty much stopped? I'd guess thay have close to zero orders for them.
 
hmm, yes, I see your point now. I was thinking big budget new boat, complete redesign inside and out, fresh start, new direction stuff, but it could well be a special addition go faster stripes and electric windows thrown in for free marketing ploy on the same old ugly duckling boat. I guess we'll have to wait and see
 
But you should not forget that the 365 was the result of Sealine employing the services of an industrial designer, and all boat styling and interior since. Following this both Fairline and Princess took on industrial design people, so Sealine lead the field, may be doing the same again, never know.

Before anyone says "dont give up the day job" I know the editing is rough (done in Paint, on a wobbly train /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif) but here's the T60 arch correctly installed.

Well they gotta do something otherwise they'll go belly up but I'm not sure this is the right idea. For me, Conran conjures up images of Shabitat bean bags and crappy lava lamps not cutting edge design

Blimey. What a collection of hard brittle rattly plastic mouldings that all was. It would have felt plusher if they did it in one big piece of bakelite.
 
Not sure you can blame Conran for typical L-R build quality /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I think its all about who is managing this company and to make a vision for it
some of the best yacht designers started as nothing but a company with a focus and his works made him design top class in yacht designing
an easy example to all this would be Fulvio De Simoni with Pershing, when he started with them in 1985 he was unknown and just left Paolo Caliaris office (designer of the old famous Mochi and Leopards) now he is by many regonized as a top designer if not the best, with everyone wanting him to do work for them
a new growing Yacht designer name is Galeazi, 10 years ago he started Azimut interior, the 46 was one of his first jobs sold about 500 of them the italian builder, today he still does Azimut inside, then he started doing Baias inside and outside, now he is doing Posillipo, Italcraft and couple of other important names, he used to work with Zuccon before (Posillipo 80s and Ferretti 90s onwards)
sometimes bringing someone designing houses or cars all alone on boats does not do all good, in some aspect of design it can help but in others it surely want (exterior, deck layout, tender etc), you need soneone who is on the sea for these items
in UK I like what Sunseeker, Princess followed by Fairline do for having a brand imange
 
Unfortunately, Sealine don't have a good track record when it comes to employing outside designers. They employed Roger Tucker who has on his CV design of the Austin Metro, Austin Montego and the blobby Ford Sierra. No wonder some Sealines turned out equally blobby

I really don't know if Sealine has a chance to improve its brand image in their higher range.
Fwiw, I'd be skeptical about that regardless of the designers they might hire, but what do I know?
Well, actually there's one thing I know for sure: I wouldn't give one single cent of my personal money to somebody who can't even spell properly the sentence that they seem to have chosen as their own motto.
Just look at the first thing appearing on their site.
Unbelievable.
