After reading other threads on connecting Garmin etrex to my raymarine dsc radio i went to the boat today to connect it up, after connecting the wires in the right order, i then turn gps to nmea out, but got no gps still in the radio,
is there anything i am doing wrong? settings?

Have you got the right speed set for nmea .. What does your radio manual say it should be .. Most are set at 4800 .. worth checking ..

its a Ray54E
The Ray54E accepts NMEA 0183 (V1.5) data from a position determining
device (such as a GPS) to provide the Latitude and Longitude position
information that is transmitted during a DSC Distress Call.
(that is taken from manual)

That'll be at 4800 baud. Also mae sure you have NMEA 1.5 selected as output from the Garmin. NMEA 2.0 protocol differs slightly in sentence content

Garmins handheld NMEA levels are not known for their strict adherance to the NMEA standards. They tend to be PC compatible but troublesome to connect to 'proper' nmea stuff.

You didn't get the point of Finn-Sailers post I feel. The baud rate (which is the speed at which NMEA has to be delivered can be changed in the Garmin set up menu. Make sure you have this right. There are other settings that have to be correct too but I don't have the manual here. Read yours!
P.S There re also issues with the Garmin serial to HSB adaptor that you get from Garmin. If you are using this beware. If not ignore the PS.

the cable i am useing is one that connects it to a pc.
just read manual for etrex and it says,
"supports the output of standard nmea 0183 version 3.0 data"
"interfaces NMEA 0183 (2.00-2.30)"
giving that the radio states v1.5 is it possible for these to work together?

So, you've connected the Garmin black to the green on the Raymarine's GPS input cable, and the Garmin white to the yellow on the Raymarine cable, and you've set the Etrex I/O format to "NMEA out", and it doesn't work?
