Connecting wires of (very) differing Sizes

I want to (re) connect the battery cable that runs forward to the windlass to the smaller gauge wire that goes to the solenoid. The last person did this poorly using a block connector, cutting the battery cable down to make it fit (not good). What is the best way to connect the larger battery cable to the smaller cable that goes to the solenoid or should the battery cable be connected straight on to the solenoid (difficult because of poor access and a tight radius for the battery cable)?

I used a threaded post for this exact situation, with ring connectors on each cable.

Exactly what I did on my Genset install. I used the clamping bolt of the battery terminals to take the lighter cables needed for the dashboard feed.
