Connecting Standard Horizon VHF/AIS to a plotter

I have recently fitted a Standard Horizon GX1400 VHF/AIS/GPS and would like to connect it to one (or both) of my plotters in the hope of showing AIS information.

Plotters are Lowrance HDS 5 Gen2 and Garmin Echomap UHD2 75CV

At this stage I do not know whether these plotters will show AIS information although I have read on another forum someone has been able to successfully display AIS info on his HDS 5 so this is encouraging.

This is definitely not my area of expertise and previous attempts I have made to get marine electronics to talk to each other have failed.

I look forward to your advice.

Thanks

Mike

The Standard Horizon GX1400 does not have AIS, or did you mean GX2400 ?

If it's actually the GX2400 you can connect that to the Lowrance via NMEA2000 or NMEA 0183.

The model of Echomap that you have doesn't support AIS, bizarrely.

Isn't that bizarre .....

I have the UHD 92 and the manual covers the 6 - 7 and 9x units ... with no mention of any NMEA difference .... my 92 shows supports and displays AIS via 0183. You would think the manual would mention something so important ??

The UHD models all had AIS support, right down to the 45CV.

This changed with the UHD2 lineup, from Garmin support:

"The UHD2 55cv and 75cv are the keyed versions of the ECHOMAP UHD2 line and don't have NMEA 2000 connectors hence, do not support AIS as there is no way to connect them with our current AIS options. The UHD2 65sv, 75sv and 95sv do have a NMEA 2000 port and as such are compatible with a much wider range of other devices, AIS included. The best way to tell these apart is the suffix of the number, the sv line being the ones able to network with other devices on the vessel."

Thanks,

It is a GX 1400.

I now realise I am confusing polling (up to 6 ships) via DSC.

Have not got a clue what this is perhaps someone will educate me.

Thanks

Mike

Interesting ... I have the Echomap UHD 92sv and all data is via 0183 as I do not have 2000 other than the B&G - which is not networked to it.
The UHD (yours) (not UHD2) models all had AIS support, which worked via 0183 or N2K.

UHD2 SV models also have AIS, but no 0183.

So, perhaps the firmware needs N2K for some reason ?

Position polling allows your VHF to send your position to another VHF. If connected to a plotter/MFD you can get someone else’s position and it will display it on screen.

Not sure what you mean with that last line ... but my UHD 92sv has both 0183 and 2000 .... but I don't use 2000. I don't network the B&G to it ... no need as it has its own sonar for depth, while the B&G has its own transducer for depth / speed.

Yours is irrelevant to the OP, it's first gen UHD, not a UHD2 like the OPs. It has 0183 and N2K, as you say, and can use either.

The OPs is a UHD2, but a cv model, it has neither 0183 or N2K, so cannot display AIS.

The last line you refer to is in response to Garmins statement "The UHD2 55cv and 75cv are the keyed versions of the ECHOMAP UHD2 line and don't have NMEA 2000 connectors hence, do not support AIS as there is no way to connect them with our current AIS options" This suggests that the current AIS firmware in Garmin MFDs is geared for N2K, not 0183.

Hope that's clearer.
