As with many subjects here, this has probably come up before but I haven't noticed nor have I found it by searching the forum.
There are apps to send smartphone sensor data in NMEA0183 format over Bluetooth.
I'm testing an Android app called "Bluetooth GPS Output", which is very simple and easy to use. It's currently sending GPS position plus gyro-stabilised heading data to Open CPN on my laptop. For phones with a barometric pressure sensor, it will also send that.
It's taking me longer to write this than it took to download and set-up the app and use it with OpenCPN. The free version is limited to 10 minutes connection time (although you can reconnect as soon and as often as you like). The paid and unlimited version is less than £2.
I shall use it as a backup GPS receiver and to test the behaviour of the plotter with gyro-stabilised heading data (I don't currently have this).
