Why do yachts need AIS in the Solent. I think that common sense should prevail in congested waters with AIS and you should turn it off and look out of the window to see what is coming at you

The sunsail yachts are used a lot for racing - sometimes they go outside the solent too ... and sometimes the sailing instructions state that you must transmit AIS b - therefore it's easier to just fit them to all their boats and leave it turned on ...

yup - I know - PITA - and the primary reason for not upgrading the firmware in my CP to display class B!
