In the last week or so I have read a number of articles which suggest that Kingfisher's was the fastest time in the Route du Rhum. For example, "....For the first time in the history of the race a monohull won overall, ahead of the first trimaran." YW Editorial Jan 03 Edn.

The official times were:

Geant: 13d 07h 53'

Kingfisher: 13d 13h 31' 47"

Now I know who crossed the line first and I know which is the faster boat and I don't want to diminish the achievements of either participant. I am also perfectly willing to accept that for an Open 60 to finish within a matter of hours of the time of the leading multihull would amount to a massive handicap victory.

Even so ..........

Kingfisher's time was a new monohull course record - and she was also the first boat across the finish line - because the tris started 24hours after the monohulls.

Agree with that. But my point is that if you start 24 hours ahead and finish 18 ahead then you've still sailed slower than the other person albeit that you might well have been expected to finish behind them.

Isn't the point of handicapping that you should all end up at the finish line together (from my vast horseracing and golfing experience...not) so if they are still 18 hours ahead that's pretty damed good.
