Confused autohelm

Can anyone help me? I have an Autohelm ST4000 wheel pilot which is starting to forget where I've asked it to go ie progressively drifting off course. This seemed to be especially bad around the Channel Islands, but not in areas of known magnetic anomalies. I have tried calibrating the deviation, but ended up steering my boat in circles forever. I also tried resetting the heading, which holds for a while, then drifts off again. Is it the flux gate compass and do they deteriorate.

Good suggestion, I'll check it out as mine was actually switched on in the chart table some of the time. Usually I love turning it off and being uncontactable.
