Hi,

I don't know if this might be of remote interest to anyone down the West Country in the near future but there is a rather eccentric project to map all of the degree confluences on the planet.

A degree confluence is the exact spot where an integer degree of latitude and an integer degree of longitude meet.

The website explaining the whole project is at http://www.confluence.org

There's a missing one from the UK at 28.0 km (17.4 miles) S of Plymouth, England, UK. (50N 4W)

http://www.confluence.org/confluence.php?lat=50&lon=-4 refers.

I was planning to do it myself this summer but I'm not sure I shall have the time.

If anyone has a go please pm me as I'd be interested to hear about it.

Already done. Here it is...

Snowleopard - you're a fraud and a cheat.

From the confluence website, I qoute "This confluence has not been visited.
Type: Water: 28 km (17 mi.) from land
Our data indicates that land will appear over the horizon by at least 0.28 degrees, or 0.53 times the angular width of the moon. Whether it is visible may depend on atmospheric conditions, the quality of your camera, and the distance of your camera above sea level."

I don't see that land in your pic and don't tell me you were facing the other way when you took that shot. Where's the handheld GPS proof.

Jeez! some people definitely have too much time on their hands.

It might just mean something to me I guess, if confluences were a natural phenomenon, but they ain't.

Confluence spotting, mmm

There is a 'sport' on Dartmoor called 'Letterboxing'. For reasons too obsure for me to follow or understand, people hide boxes with rubber stamps in them on various places on the moor and people walk about collecting the stamp prints in their books. Perhaps one could set up a channel confluencing system in the same way..... Stamps on pot bouys - you'll never notice the extra ones, or you could post photo's showing your GPS reading on your boat when you arrive.

Darn it, I could have sold this idea for next years April YM!

I think it's a great idea, in a trivial sort of way. Looking at the already reported points round the world, it's an excellent way of seeing pictures of different landscapes worldwide.

There are still a few within easy reach by boat off UK and Ireland. I'm planning already...
