Confession - I have never serviced a winch

could this be why my anti-social, dangerous, foolhardy, irresponsible behaviour in not servicing winches has turned out okay

No-one has said any of those things. The worst that might happen in a 22' boat is pawl failure under load. The handle might whizz round, and it might clonk you on the wrist, which might smart a bit. Neglecting giving a few minutes love from one decade to the next is more likely to result in a pain in your wallet than anything else. It's basic common sense to give a bit of lube to anything that moves. Some people choose to ride bicycles with dry rusty squeaky chains, but we all know that a bit of oil makes them a whole lot better.

No one's saying its anti social. Its up to you but a little lubrication once a year does make a big difference and may save you getting wrapped on the knuckles. Do it while waiting for the tide.
