Computer/Laptop/ISP survey

Hello Abigain

USB Wifi with removable antenna

this unit has great mac drivers, I can reccommend it as exceptional.

the removable antenna allows you to fit a veriety of external antenna, as high gain as you want.

For the wok, one trick to find the focus is to hold it up to the sun, put your hand in front and feel the hottest spot, a good guide. You can usually get away with up to 5 mtrs on usb2 if a quality extention cable. there are amplified cables available.

Buffered 5m usb2 extension cable

hope that helps., you can connect 5m cable to 5m virtually ad infinitum if using buffered, they are also self powered. this way you can get the antenaa as high as possible.

I have pay as you go sims for france and spain too but not tried in the options card yet - should be ok I think.

I have used my options card in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Sicily and currently malta - the biggest problems are finding the right APN to use ... which isnt really a problem.

Morning Richard, the gps feature is for use when wardriving, it simply logs the position YOU are at, thats all. ie, a location you can go back to to access the ap if you wanted to.

Joe,

I'm sure you are right, there seems to be no reference to GPS facilities in the help file or on the web sites.

The screen also has a column for distance which shows as zero when I have GPS connected, which is why I thought there might be a facility to obtain the position of an AP.

I do recall, (in my distant memory), seeing somewhere on the web that it would provide positions of AP's, but cant find it again, and it may have related to something else.

BTW, when you connect powered USB cables together, how to you protect the connection from the elements?

Richard

Hi Richard, if you are using amplified cables (best) then self amalgamating tape works ok, better still is to take the case off of the buffer (Basically a single port hub !), and do the steradent trick.. cut a hole in the bottom of the tube to allow the connector to go through, slide up the cable to the buffer and connector, then after taping bottom of tube around hole, fill with epoxy, you can get away with a small part of the tube, around 2.5 inches long.

I am very proud to say that I use a Mac.

Now, when it comes to 'aquiring' (from a passing clam, for example...) Maxsea, this can be very annoying. But on the whole, I don't have a lot of problems. I sometimes use GPSNavX with the French SHOM charts. I have a Magellan Explorist plugged in via USB, and decode Navtex, DWD, Weatherfax etc with MultiMode.

Thanks to Capt'larty, I have a borrowed USB dongle hanging off of the boom for my connectivity, with two 1.8m USB extensions. I did have to move down the other end of the marina... And use a certain social charm to get a username & password for the local wifi signal coming out of a large building however. All legal mind you. For you wifi legality sticklers.

On the topic, I'd be quite interested to see a case where someone has been charged for using an open access point. There have been no prior cases in the USA (it's a hot topic), but who knows what local law is here.

I think it would be vitually impossible to ever be charged, if you see an open point, its open, thats i.. now, if you use aircrack or similar to crack a wep hash (Wep is crappo ) then fairy nuff... but an open point, honestly guv, I didnt realise, and who the hell would no. Noone. It really is NOT an issue. the tools are their with an ap to add a modicum of security, many dont, if they dont, its free. there is much free wifi now in many areas and growing, there is no way a user of an open ap can tell if it is free for all, so go for it.. there have been a few trial cases, a few minor convictions, and thats it. mountain and molehill.
