Hello All, I have been given a desk top PC from my sisters practice, they renew them every two years. Trouble is it was part of a network, how do I tell the PC that its no longer in a network. All data entered is not being saved I think its trying to save it to a server, seems a shame to throw it away Thanks /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Suggest you provide a bit more information about the PC. e.g. what OS is it running and what kind of network was it connected to. I'm assuming you have an admin username & password for it?

It sounds like you are logging in as your sisters old network login , which in most cases will not have any admin rights to change user settings anyway.
Does the practice have an IS support person who can tell your sister how to disable any network policy settings, and give you the old administrator login details to do this if needed ?.
Off course this is assuming the PC was given away outside any support contract and is above board.

Does the PC have all the necessary hardware to convert to a standalone computer ? , RAM, harddisk , cddvd-r/rw drive etc.
If so i and you cannot get much help any other way , it maybe better that you ask friends and family if they have a copy of Windows XP home etc . You can then load a complete new operating system by inserting the disk-1 and rebooting.
On startup you need to set the PC to reboot from cd-rom (normally F12 option-3) press return and then following the directions from the Windows setup.
If you ask around you may find someone you know or a work colleague, actually knows a person in IT that could help you out.

Thamks for your help so far, the PC OS is XP (SP1), has all necessary hard ware to be stand alone. I have log in password, and can change settings, but once turned off all data is lost and screen saver reverts to her doctors pracice one. Its as though its not saving to C drive but else where Thanks again for help so far.

How galling to hear a GP practice replaces their PCs every two years. My secretary's PC at the hospital is 6 years old and there are plenty others in the hospital that are even older. TudorDoc

The computer that I'm on now was on a network. After digging around I found that I was able to disable the network card - but I can't remember how I did it /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

On Windows 98 you can right click on My Computer icon and one of the options is to Disconnect from Network. Is that the same on XP?

BrendanS will soon come up with the answer. Just be patient (as the doctor said /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif).

The answer to this really depends on how the network was setup, and what connections it is trying to make, and is a bit of a minefield to give instructions remotely. It may be easier as already said to reformat and reinstall the Operating System

However, as a first start (I'm assuming XP!)
A. Remove any network drives it is trying to connect to
1. Click Start, then Open My Computer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Disconnect Network Drive.
3. Select all the network drives that you no longer need, and then click OK.

B. Disable ethernet card
Click Start, then RIGHT click on My Network Places. Then click on Properties.

Look for the item(s) in the list that contains Ethernet or fast Ethernet in the title. RIGHT click on that item and select 'Disable'

Then reboot and see what effect that has, and come back and let us know.

Thanks again to all. BrendanS, I will try what you have said and post a reply. I dont have XP OS to re install as I am still on 98 with this PC thanks again .
