I had a similar problem with my computer a few days before christmas, turns out it was a bad stick of memory causeing the problem. Hope this helps.

Does it get to bios screen?
Not bios menus - just the first screen.
I think I would start by checking every single cable/plug/connection - inside the case. Expansion/contraction + vibration often causes them to come adrift, particulary drive data cables.

Re: Any Beeps?

Does it give any beeps as it tries to start?

If so, I've got a list of what they mean (usually)

Also agree with checking memory cards/sticks else it's

"and what did you do to it last?"

"Nothing"

"and what did you do to it last?"

"Nothing"

"and what did you do to it last?"

"Nothing"

continue until you admit/remember what you did do to it

Re: Any Beeps?

Could be the cmos battery is dead - do you have a voltmeter to check it? Whilst you have it out, reset the bios - which will either mean moving a jumper from position a to position b, or by shorting two solder blobs (both will be next to the battery holder). Do you have the mboard manual?

Had similar on my computer, was bad memory, if you have 2 memory sticks, try removing the one on bank 1, if no joy swap the one in bank 0 with one removed.
Other possibility is power supply has failed. Had that on another computer, was bad solder joint.

Re: Any Beeps?

Phil,

Sounds like a stuffed system board or PSU!

What PC is it?

Hope your problem is easier to resolve than mine- ended up with a power pack failure that had shorted through the motherboard and the harddrive. What made it worse was that I had just started the machine to do a back-up having continually put it off for the previous week /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

A single bbep at start up is the most common signal from the mother board letting you know it's ok.

Multiple beeps, a bit like morse code can tell you of other problems; so if you have just the one, it sounds like the mother board thinks its ok.

Re: Any Beeps?

Its a Packard Bell something media
The a drive light doesnt come on at all
The dvd drive opens and spins, so can it still be the PSU?
CD drive doesnt open
no hard disk activity
USB mouse lights up
wont go to set up or move from the set up option screen.
PSU and chip fans are working
