Compulsory log keeping

Seems that there's an article in one of the yottie mags this month which says that all boats must have a passage plan (however short the passage!) and must also keep a log of every trip. Apparently there's legislation afoot to this effect.

If true this is one step nearer to a boat tax, this government will try to squeeze every penny from us, so be prepared!
 
Quite right.
I'm supposed to have lesson plans so why not.
Anyone know whether its possible to find a logbook in the Sowester format - I can only find Adlard Coles and Blue Water ones and I don't like the format.

Slight difference John, I presume you get paid for your lessons, although of course you could volunteer to do them for nought!

I have always kept a log of every trip made for my own interest, but do object to some prat somewhere telling me and everyone else that it will be compulsory.

And as for a passage plan, what crap, half the time when we go out for a dive we've no idea where we might end up!
 
Sounds bolx. I hardly ever have a passage plan. The word "plan" seems to imply premeditation. I get to end of Lymington River, then decide to turn left or right based on which looks nicer, or praps st on to Yarmouth. My plan would be "go where choose"
 
If this is true we'll have passage plans for cars next. What a load of bollox. I'll just have one passage plan and if stopped I'll say "I'm lost"!

I haven 't got a log John. But I have a big plank. With string attached.

Suppose if you get lost and then they find the log. They can find you. Cos you've told them where your going. Yes it makes perfect sense!!

Ooh that could be fun on the river, I can just see it now.

Day 1, turned left out of marina, turned round and came back.
Day 2, turned right out of marina ditto.

There that's given Haydn enough info for him to do his log. He don't need so much info:

Day 1,Went out and came back,
Day 2 ditto
Day 3 ditto
etc

H, just copy ad infinitum.

Out of interest though, who's going to check these and what powers will "they" have to enforce them and what happens if you refuse or can't produce one?

Anyone got any more info??
 
Suppose there going to flag us down, mid chanel. Then it will be. "Oi, what you doing here. Your supposed to be up the river wizzy." " Bloody hell, good job you came along, humble thanks".!!

Already got it in my log book.

Went to River Wissey. Saw something interesting. Started to come back and official Pillock asked me where I'd been. Told him sod all. He said he couldn't find "Sod Hall" on the map, asked me if it's anywhere near "Cough" where the last bloke he'd asked had been?. Came back anyway.

Yep, I'm really getting in to filling in this log book already
 
This is obviously another load of crap and nonesense (like BSC and compulsory certification) which has been dreamed up by some ignorant non-boater.
Log books and passage plans for big commercial vessels- sure, because several watch keepers are involved and there are charterers and owners who have an interest in how the vessel is run. - but on pleasure boats !??
I would dearly like to meet the instigator of this one !!

Axshully yes. Have you had much to do with those ferries? (Not sure if you had a boat in Lym b4 the Aloo). They consistently break the limit, 8-9 knots is common. A few times they've come up behind me, while I have 6.5 kts on the GPS (limit, for those not familiar, is 6kts) and given me the 5 hoot blast. Blimmin loud too. So I call em on vhf and tell them what my intentions are, and ask them what is causing the confusion on their bridge. They blather on and say they want to overtake, so I get them to repeat their intention to overtake and tell them I'm doing 6.5kts, and inform them as to the accepted hoots that a would-be overtaker is supposed to blast at the overtakee - and it's not 5 blasts. Then they get very pissed off and say how well qwalified they are (yer, right....). Twonks.

No, no experience of the Lym ferries except they seem to do 9.5 kts in a 6 kt river and all that hooting business when a chap is trying to have a lie-in in the morning. I mean I have already had to put up with all those keen boaties going out at first light - Oh! for the peace of the Med.
 
When I first started cruising I attended a shore-based course and remember being told there that the log was a legal document (in the event of an accident). Whilst I realise that this will be so in the world of commercial shipping - will it not also apply in the world of pleasureboating?
I've always kept a log and am fairly diligent in updating it hourly and completing the narrative page at the end of a passage. Apart from it being a useful reminder of passage times when I'm doing some planning, I also quite enjoy reading it and remembering some of the sails we've had.
I wouldn't have thought it necessary to suggest that logs are made compulsory as I thought we all kept one anyway. Not too good when we see legislation being applied to recreational activities
