I walked around to the front gate of Ganges last time I was at Shotley. The button ain't as high as it used to be, and the whole lot is likely to fall down on top of you!
The mast is protected though, so can't be taken down. The place is sadly run down. For those that know Windrush John of the Crouch and occasional ECF event, he trained there and went up the mast in his own words "more times than I could count".
I know 3 or 4 who trained at Ganges. Been trying to get one in particular to come to some forum do's- I went to Calais on their 45' stinky sorry Mobo last year (and I loved it )
New recruit training in the RN isn't the same now - they get weekends off
Do you know what period this was, saw guards on the gate with SLR's (i think) and then others with the old Lee Enfield 303 and wearing old fashioned steel helmets, my uncle passed out from there in 1941 as a sail maker and eventually served in the Eastern Med on sailing caiques raiding around Turkey and Greece. He once told me that you would never run so fast as you would when someone was firing a machine gun at you!!
