Have not tried the 3M product, so can't comment.
We use Farecla G3 if the gelcoat is oxidized, then finish with Farecla G10.
G10 is very fine and I doubt you will cut through the gelcoat if you use the rotary polishing machine correctly.
Farecla have some good how to use videos.
An electiric DA polisher, to name one, "Kestrel" is a very light easy to use tool , it's used flat so you don't have to worry about keeping the mop at an angle.
As to compounding each year, as has been mentioned above, as long as the gelcoat is waxed/sealed it shouldn't be necessary.
We now use A-Glaze, yes it's expensive but it's one of those snake oils that works.
