Complete newcomer

I guess it must shift. I'm sure on last years trip down via Porlock Weir to Portishead, we saw a distinct, definite line in the water between Porlock Weir and Breaksea Point, certainly on the way back on the flood tide as we sailed from the blue into the brown. I remember the feeling of loss as we crossed over and left the blue behind :(

Seem to recall Swansea Bay, east of the Gower, is usually blue. But that might be relative to what I'm used to. When they lower the toll on the bridge next year, might move the boat down to Cardiff, just to be a day closer to the blue water. Maybe. Skinflint that I am, can only say it would've been a definite move if they'd removed the toll altogether :)

Question - how far from portishead before the sea begins to turn blue and the conditions are non tidal?

We're thinking about possibly trying to find a mooring down there - it sounds like it could be a better base.

Thanks

As others have said, Swansea Bay is blue on the Welsh side; don't know on the English side, perhaps around ilfracombe; places to moor on the English side of the western Bristol Channel are quite restricted though.

It does not get 'non tidal' anywhere. Harbours are generally either drying or locked as far west as Padstow and Milford respectively. Even the outer approaches of the Channel feature significant tidal gates.

Agreed, the bridge toll is psychological barrier far in excess of the actual money. I'm going across the bridge next Sunday. I might have gone on Saturday as well, but for the toll.

We've been to Sharpness a few times from both Cardiff and Portishead - nice run but I agree I felt better having two engines. Regarding Mooring - I've moored at Portishead and am now in Penarth - great company (Quays Marinas) and the staff are brilliant, especially in Penarth. Also moored on the G&S for a couple of years - if you have a CRT licence you are entitled to (I think) half a dozen locks a year but if you don't have one its £25 for each lock and about the same for a weekly licence - this has actually put us off visiting the G&S which is a shame as we still have some good friends there.
