Hi,my trim tabs require a new solenoid coil ,they are the older QL [Volvo] system and two dealers I've tried said they can't get them nowadays. The system works perfect barring the solenoid coil which has burnt out there are two one for each ram so was going to renew both. Can anyone give me any info on the coils or where I will get compatable coil rather than throw the system away and buy another system.

What current & voltage are you switching - small hydraulic pump ??

The term "Solenoid" is a bit variable. Once the term was used for a relay ie the coil actuates an armature which actuates electrical contacts. Perhaps now the term means a coil with armature which actuates something else like a valve or mechanical arm. (for a starter solenoid it often both) Which does the OP refer to? In either case it has a coil which can burn out ie overheat and damage the insulation of the wires of the coil. If it is a relay then it should be easy to find a replacement relay with contacts heavy enough to take the current. Typcical to power a motor drive or hydraulic pump. If it is an actuator then yes try to get a motor rewind shop to rewind the coil with new wire. ol'will

If you have what VicS had indicated go to a decent Auto Electrical repair /stockist ,plenty in the Durite catalogue, insulated return, chassis return,12volt.24 volt. I am pretty sure I have used the 40 amp square black
Automotive relays to control a tail lift hydraulic pump in the past.

That sounds good, the solenoids that need replaced are 24 x24x24 mm black cube with a 9mm hole down the centre with two connections and are 12v dc with a 20amp fuse in the line. Thanks to everyone for their help.

they sound like fairly normal solenoid coils used in hydraulic actuators, as long as the centre hole size is ok should be easy to get, we use small alco coils in HVAC that sound about the right size and available in most voltages.

Looking at the picture again you might be looking for hydraulic solenoid valves not electrical solenoids or relays.Might be worth looking at RS or talk to a hydraulic outfit, should be possible to replace them with a bit of plumbing

Try sending a PM to superheat6K, who I think has done a similar repair.

I replaced the solenoids on my QL trim tab unit a couple of years ago. I will see if I can find what I used, but likely Ebay. I know they were quite powerful, 15 VA I recall, but they have worked just fine since. Note the cable ties holding them in place.

Something like this which is 17w, but this one has a 12mm hole, which might be a bit big. I can't find the identical ones that I bought

Solenoid Coil 12V 17W for TOMASETTO AT09 AT13 Alaska Artic Antartic - NEW! | eBay

If you dismantle the solenoid stems be very careful as these part open to allow the tabs to spring back up, with a small ball bearing that allows the port to open when the pump is not running, and it is easy to drop the small o ring seals and ball bearing. Don't ask me how I know this.

Thanks for that Superheat, that's exactly the same unit as I have, spent hours trawling the net the past weekend and can't find anything with a 9mm hole, will give it another go later. cheers
