I'm clearing a garage for the widow next door. Most of the stuff is tools but I also found a compass. It's a Heath externally-gimballed grid steering compass and looks to be in good nick except that the dovetail mount that attaches to the boat isn't there, The card is around 4" dia and the whole casing around 7" dia. I know grid compasses are hard to find these days.

I'm not actually selling it for now but would like to know what it would fetch. Any thoughts?

Do not sell it - use it
I have had my Sestral grid compass for 47 years & i use it every time i go out
I have Gps, chart plotter, electric compass & a bulkhead compass but i prefer my old Sestral set up just under the tiller every time easy to see, i do not forget the course & it is accurate
Why on earth mainstream manufacturers do not sell grid steer compasses ( apart from the odd few)these days i cannot understand

I, too, have a Bosun Grid Compass similar to that mentioned above.... unused. I had one on another boat, and far preferred using the 'grid alignment' to peering at the numbers half the night. I have a smaller Silva LB33 grid compass I got from my good friend RS, which will be mounted soon on my current boat.

You can keep your fluxgate thingys.....

I've got a couple of dovetail mounts if you need them (bronze I think) are they 1 size fits all

The bronze ones are for a sestrel ITYWF. The mounts for the Heath Bosun are plastic. The are not interchageable. One is female ( the Heath) the other is male.
At lest the ones I have are

I have/use a Heath I can mount it in the forward end of the cockpit. Nice and visible but gets in the way a bit. Or i can mount it at the back of the cockpit safely tucked under the tiller. I have a light above this postion.
