Compass Swinging (a follow up report)

We had the compass swung this morning. It is positioned in the bridge-deck just above the engine as seems to be the case in many more traditional designs. It is a brand new Plastimo Contest in a 23 year old boat. It was found to be 18 degrees out! It was checked with the engine on and off. A correction box was fitted and the deviation is, apparently, now 1 degree. It all seems a bit of a black art so I will just have to take the guys word for it. I don't want to completely miss St. Kitts next month after all!!!

Sure you didn't get the post-magnetic flip model and have now spent lots converting it back to (current) magnetic north?

I used Robinson's Compass Adjusters in the Hamble. In total it cost £123.38 which included a correction box as I had lost mine. Not cheap, I grant you, but I am glad that I have had it done. He reccomended having it re-done every three years or so but then he would wouldn't he? I don't think he will be seeing me again in the near future! I have his number somewhere if anyone feels the need not to be 18 miles out for every 60 travelled!! As I would have been!!! All the best.

You could always get a 2nd compass for the S Hemisphere.. only problem is that you wouldn't know which one to use and when../forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

Yes but did you visit his shop, what a great place! Almost as good as Moto-Spares in Weymouth in the days when it was stuffed with ex MOD stuff.

No! I didn't know he had a shop!! We just motored past the Port Hamble Fuel Barge and he leapt aboard. I will investigate the shop on my next visit.

Well, funny you should say that but the guy did keep saying that 'it was a really good day for swinging' as he was stood in my cock-pit. It was slightly alarming.

Full of what you might call Yachting Ephemera (sp?), everything from cabin furniture to ships models to compasses and sextants (of course). No kind of presentation, its all lumped in there, things appear wrapped in old newspaper along the lines of "I'm sure we've got one of those somewhere". Just the best kind of shop there is, but not cheap.

Oh and I forgot, don't make a special trip and expect to find it open, it often isn't!
