Compass oil

A lot of answers already - but I agree to all who are using lampoil or similar. In old days the media was alcohol. Now a tip for the tricky bit filling up without having a small bubble (maybe not said yet):

PUT THE COMPASS IN THE FREEZER LIKE SOME HOURS IN MINUS 20 CELSIUS. ALSO THE CONTAINER WITH THE OIL. THIS WILL MAKE THE MEDIA SMALLER. THEN OF COURSE TAKE IT OUT AND ASAP FILL UP AND THIGHTEN SCREW AND SO ON. OF COURSE A TINY BUBBLE WILL BE THERE ANYHOW - BUT - THATS IT!

(because then the little bubble will dissapear as the compass getting a normal temperature)

Have a nice day

Im sure you have the best materials in stock after all its your business.

when your compass has just dumped its oil in your cockpit as my path did and unlike my danforth or seastrel which both developed ever larger bubles over a year or more, my German path just did it without a bubble first, there isent always (mostly) a specalist to be found!

In all cases i used parafin and its worked faltlessly! The oil in my path smelt awful so i did hesitate before useing parafin.Haveing done so its not cloudy the card swings as before and the repaire cost 1.40Euros.

Perhaps you could tell me what liquid my E.VION-PARIS uses? As to my horror she has just developed a small bubble after only 40years service (or more) otherwise i will cool her (im not brave enough to freez her) and add frozen parafin--but not yet.She is my back up and bearing compass. And once belonged to the French navy.

Are bubbles a sign that the diaframs about to break,do all compasses have diaphrams?

Im asking as my Danforth is still working perfectly though not on my boat, and that lost oil perhaps 15 years ago by now and i topped that up with parafin.

I was to say the least shocked when my path broke her diaphram,it was realy almost disolving, and made me wonder if the oil used by them attacked the "rubber" which was very very thin? As i said i replaced it with an old innertube and parafin so far works perfectly??

What do you think ???

I hate to say this but it was your company that advised me to use baby oil in my Ritchie compass when I called....
