Can any one recomend someone on the south coast between Poole and Chichester who can swing a magantic compass and issue deviation card?

What is the expected cost to pay? Boat can be moved to any location.

Your help much appreciated.........

Can't help you, but if you have a motor boat i.e. capable of doing 15 knots or more and a gps on board, in practice unless the compass is way out then it matters little!

I expect to get slated on this, but lets face it not many people can helm to within a few degrees anyway!

Best you can probably helm to is 5-10 degrees on a powerboat at speed, but our old Targa 29's compass had a deviation approaching 25 degrees on some headings. I don't believe they are adjusted in the first place. If you're going to have one fitted, it may as well work properly, IMHO.

There used to be a guy at Shamrock Quay who was pretty good.

Ignore some of the advice. Your compass should be set correctly. Even if it is hard to hold a tight course at times. If for example your GPS died and fog descended, YES it could happen. you would be in deep xxxx should you go aground ,or worse because you thought plus or minus 30 degrees was ok..Dont think your insurance co would think much of one or two of the comments!

Have a laugh, but I watched my compass deviate by over 100 degrees when I stood a beer can down beside it at the weekend! Good job I finished the beer and moved the can away huh?

What beer was that? There can't be many beers that don't come in aluminium cans these days

I disagree with those who suggested to ignore the deviations.
But I'd rather invest 20 minutes or so, rather than cash.
Just find a suitable place (no waves, no other boats around) and compare the GPS heading with the compass.
Do that in steps of 10 degrees (5 for higher accuracy), and write down the results. The deviation card is done.
But take your time - keep the boat on a straight course for some time, in each leg (the GPS takes a while to react).
And check that the GPS is properly set (magnetic heading) and locked to 4 or 5 satellites, possibly more.

you can helm to within one degree if you put your mind to it, with suitable instruments or a visual target, but you wouldn't want to do it while cruising, it takes enormous concentration. great fun to do as an exercise though

Maybe it was Iron Brew!!! Actually you have me wondering what the hell that can was, as you say it could NOT have been aluminium.

Compass went back to normal following removal of the can from the area though.
