Previously ordered quite a bit from the German based chandler through their UK website.
Alas, this website no longer seems to be around. When I Google them I only get links to German and Dutch websites.

What am I missing, or have they abandoned the UK market?

Yes. They stopped trading in the UK. Can't remember when exactly. Year or so ago.

Dont remember if any reasons were given.

Hello xyachtdave, iv'e started a thread earlier today about my experience with Compss 24. My partner Sue ordered me an origo ( not origo labelled, but exactly the same ) for Christmas. The couriers were DHL, who sent us a letter informing us that the cooker had been returned to Germany because of improper paper work. Sue got a full refund from compass 24, who said they could not understand what had happened. This Tuesday, 8th February 2022, i emailed compass and again ordered the cooker. DHL delivered the cooker to our house on Friday, 11 February 2022! It took just 3 days from ordering to receipt of item. As it turned out, the error turned out to be at the DHL end on the first delivery attempt. I had to pay £63 for tax and duty, but i was happy with my purchase. I have no links whatsoever with either Compass 24 or Germany, but only relating my experience. They also stock the single cooker at about £136. If you do order one i hope you get as good a service as we had. All the best, Oz.

In a thread I read earlier oz-1 bought an Origo cooker but did not say whether he bought from Compass24's German or UK website.
In any event you will find that most European websellers provide the option clicking on an English Language option.
Sometimes when searching, in order to ferret out items not immediately findable when using search terms in English, it can be useful to use Google Translate in order to conduct a search in other languages.

Thanks Oz-1, I searched the forum before posting about Compass24 and came up with this, so resurrected it!

I'm glad your cooker purchase worked out, hopefully my order will show this week...

I too bought an Origo type cooker from Compass 24 recently. Having read the reviews on here about them I wasn't expecting it to turn up for ages which would have been fine with me as it'll be a while before I can spend any time down on the boat. Imagine my surprise when it turned up within a week of ordering! So I'm quite happy with my order from them.

I was just thinking it’s been nearly a week and I’ve not heard anything…

About half an hour later it arrived, without any additional charges for vat or customs etc!

I confess complete ignorance to the use of 'buggy whip' in a yachting forum and was forced to look it up. My ignorance was compounded as I was not entirely sure what a buggy is or was - other than thinking it was a small 'vehicle' not necessarily horse drawn.

noun
a horsewhip once used by a driver of a buggy
“since buggies have been replaced by cars the buggy whip has become a symbol for anything that is hopelessly outmoded”

You are never too old to learn something.

Thanks for the definition, I was also wondering about the term & was set to look it up once I'd read to the end of the thread & there you'd done it for me.

Buggy whip is a new one on me too, US specific I presume.
Given the astronomical price of the odd one that comes up for sale there must be a demand. For boats without fitted gas it is a good option.

Buggy whip:

With no disrespect to our American cousins and I wonder what the UK equivalent might be, if there is an equivalent - even better - a marine equivalent.....

I did rack my memory cells and came up with ........ nothing. There are lots of possibilities but the way Thinwater used it - suggests to me in might be common parlance (in America). Our language goes back well beyond anything the Americans might use but I drew a blank - maybe they have more colour (or color) in their language than I had given them credit (another lesson learnt :)).

Maybe 'tawse' fits the bill ?

Which our southern (or US) relations may need to check :)

'Put it on the slate'

First impressions - when I went to primary school, first day, the village school had two class rooms entered through a small hall, or larger room. On this first day of term there had been a clearout and there was a large pile of 'slates' - ready to be chucked out. Actual slates in a wooden frame, like a picture frame. Presumably these had been used up until recently in the school, or no one had the courage to throw them out. It left a last impression. Fortunately paper had taken over when I joined the education system - but we still had the tawse.

Sorry - no marine memories from such a tender age. :(

No maritime link really but could it be, like a good, old fashioned - Kick up the arse ?

.

I think not being sold is more about quality (so good that no one needs to replace it) and not enough demand from first time buyers.
The latter may be from people preferring gas cookers because of being ill informed. ; )
Could also be because of the demise of small boat sailing...

And yet my Corsair F-24 has an Origo (30-years old). Given the little bit I use it, I appreciate it's simplicity. I rather doubt a counter top propane stove would still be safe after 30 years in an ocationally damp environment. On the othr hand, with the spare canister I came across, I'm sure the Origo will last until the boat goes to it's grave.
