What routes exist to get some kind of commercial ticket? I appreciate much of this is probably on the RYA site but some real life experiences/suggestions are useful. Some idea of timescale, cost, locations etc as well

I would advise getting the medical done - or at least being very sure that you can pass it - before embarking on the rest of the training. I know someone who spend rather a lot of money on training to YM, sea survival etc with the hope of being able to have a bit of a career change, only to then discover that he was unable to pass the medical.

Excellent advise but don't just read the questionnaire and assume you will pass, best to talk to an approved medical examiner. There is an upper age limit as well.

If you already have RYA Day Skipper and upwards, you can get a commercial endorsement by taking an STCW 95 course.
I did mine a few years back at http://www.redensigntraining.com/ You'll need a medical as well but they will organise that. I thoroughly recommend them.

Are they allowed to discriminate on age? I thought a new law was passed last year to completely remove discrimination in all forms - for instance as of next year the ladies will pay the same as us for car insurance
ETA: before you say it, age does not make you less fit, Lack of fitness does. Although older people do tend to be less fit and able there is no reason to exclude an older person who can demonstrate fitness and this is what the law seeks to resolve.

To be honest its the Cruising Instructor which has an upper age limit of 64 years. I had always thought this applied to the Commercial Endorsement but I am not so sure it does.

as of next year the ladies will pay the same as us for car insurance
And on the other hand, us chaps will get less per year out of our pensions because they're no longer allowed to use the statistic that women tend to draw theirs for longer.

The upper age limit has gone.
However, the renewal period normally 5 years can be reduced to a shorter time period.
Hence when using an Instructor you have to check validity of both the Cruising Instructor ticket and the Medical Ticket. You could be asked to retake your medical annually.

There is no upper age limit to the commercial endorsement.
There is no requirement to hold any STCW '95 certificates in order to obtain a commercial endorsement. All you need is a one day Sea Survival (RYA, STCW or Seafish) certificate and an in date medical.
From 1 April 2012 this will change slightly as a new online theory exam for commercial skippers will be introduced. The exam will cover many of the rules, regulations and obligations that a commercial skipper should be aware of.
