Just got this from the RYA, when querying some facts in a recent publication :

" Can you confirm that a YM Coastal, can "only commercially endorse up to 20 miles from a safe haven", as mentioned in this article?

Thought this was 60Nm for Coastal & 150Nm for Offshore."

------------------------------------------------------------

"Yes, Yachtmaster Coastal is only up to 20 miles.

Yachtmaster Offshore without a qualified mate is up to 60 miles, while Yachtmaster Offshore with a qualified mate is up to 150 miles."

But not on your own, you need a second commercially endorsed coastal skip as a minimum.

so Yachtmaster on their own is limited to 60nm, or thats how I work.

But not on your own.

Still not quite right, you should still have a second crew member on board for all areas unless following para 7/single handed guidance which you can not in Cat 2 waters up to 60NM.

Granted the qualification of that crew member changes as you move up the scale.

As a YM Offshore you can operate up to 150NM but there are a large number of things that might restrict you to 60NM

Over 60 all crew should have a ENG1 not ML5
Over 60 Sail someone on board should hold RYA diesel
Over 60 Power someone on board should hold AEC
Over 60 someone on board should hold Medical First Aid

and so it goes on
