just after any comments on the Volvo TAMD 41 good or bad please as looking at boats with them in.
Also do they have to have there valve clearances checked regular.

It's the later 24 valve development ( kad44 and kad300) that have twice as many valves which need to have the valve clearances checked by the book.
The ad41 is as simple and bullet proof as they get . But as with any engine ask for some evidence of service history.
A well kept engine should be reasonably clean - or maybe its just me.
Look for any oil leaks.
Any corrosion at front of engine may be water pump leak and could also indicate neglect . A water pump leak may be cheaply repairable with new seals although a new pump is not cheap.

IMHO Good as the base engine for many later TAMD that followed, and not over stressed. The 41 was an improvement on the TMD / TAMD 40.

Valves clearances every 100 hours or once per annum I guess. Not complicated - simple non hydraulic rockers.

I would be more concerned to see what state the zincs are in because coolers from VP requiring replacement due to de-zincification of the brass VP used in stupid locations within seawater coolers (rather than slightly more expensive Cupro Nickel) means very expensive fixes.

I have run a TAMD41-p for the past eight seasons and the only problem I have had is with the Volvo sea water strainer, which is difficult to seal (despite a new gasket), resulting in over heating. I have replaced the filter with a Vetus one. Apart from that it has proved totally reliable and easy to maintain. My engine has no anodes to replace and valve clearance hardly changes at all over several hundred hours running.

Curious ,do the heat exchangers have any pencil anodes to protect them or not. ?
There most certainly were on my early 40A.
Not aware of any on my Perkins engines.

Had them in 2 Sunseekers.(AD41's) Nice simple engines and reliable if looked after.
The earlier ones had pencil anodes in the coolers. be carefull removing them as you could bust the soldering on the end cap.
Got the T shirt :). Easy to repair though. Would prefer them to my current kad 44's. Much less fussy.

I've got two AD41P-A's and as said they are simple to work on. I did my first service a few weeks ago and it was pretty straight forward.

No fancy supercharger thingy or electrics that will break when things get wet.

There are no anodes in engine or heat exchangers.

Thanks for that. The design of the heat exchanger on the 40A was rather flawed but was soon upgraded to the 40B.
Doubt many owners even knew what lay underneath those couple of square drive blanking plugs.
By the time found and removed the things, the anode had totally vanished leaving no trace.
