Comma oil for diesel engines-good or not?

I've had 2 opinions now that the oil used in my engines is not that great. Both opinions of engineers that work in commercial vehicles. Now the guy that serviced my engines is a decent fellow and does a quick thorough service. He rated the comma oil that he used.

So now, I'm confused. One guy says use it as a flushing oil, the other wouldn't touch it. Is this a case of experts opinions clashing here? Niether of the engineers is selling to me and one I consider a friend :-).

Can anyone add to this? And any recommendations? I was minded to use Shell rimula.

2 x Volvo TAMD70C's from 1977.
 
Shell RimulaX is certainly been the recomendation of the local Yanmar agent for many many years.

How many other oils state that they are designed for truck and tractor turbo diesels............

comma is a multigrade cheapie fluid will only meet have the specification of a "decent" lube.
go to you local motor factors they bulk buy this stuff
 
The make of oil does not matter. It's the spec. All oils are made to a quality. Cant remember the exact figures and letters. Some one will come along and tell you. But you will find them on the can.

[/ QUOTE ] And yet it appears it is used extensively by fleet and commercial operators. Something of a paradox, eh what? As said above, go for the specification.
 
Only quoting something said to me by someone who should know.

Specifications are only part of the story - they tend to be somewhat limited in their scope. The cost of oil is peanuts in maintaining an engine, so go for a good, reputable make which also meets the spec.
 
If Comma blend an oil that meets or slightly exceeds the spec. requred for the engine, then it will be fine.

Comma vs Shell is like comparing Tesco vs Shell petrol. It all comes from the same base stock, all have similar additive pack. One has marketing budget in the £millions, one is somewhat less.

I haven't a clue about your engine spec., but I imagine it NEEDS a low spec. oil anyway, something like a mono grade 30?
 
I'm just a stickler for good quality oils and until Comma can prove to me that their stuff is the same as Shell etc (minus the marketing budget) then I will keep coughing up (or indeed "shelling" out) for the dearer stuff. I also use Slick 50 every year after in each engine with the new oil change.
 
Agreed. The constituents of oil ain't just oil. Check out the expanding polymers (Styrene Butadiene Co-Polymer) that thicken the oil when it gets hot. Or the molecules that attract the carbon but deposit it in the filter.

And what about the anti-combustion additives. Yep, engine oil is very susceptible to catching fire inside your engine without these additives.

Maybe the sticky stuff - the stuff that makes it stick to cylinder walls yet flow freely through pumps, passges, bearings and filters?

In our line of business often used to visit various truck dealers including Volvo down at Aylesford,seem to remember a bulk oil tank on site and the tanker topping it up had a local address on the side.Still perhaps he had just arrived from Sweden and the Volvo label had fallen off.
