coming over from a sailing yacht

I always find it amusing the misconceptions of yotties coming over to Mobos.

To the OP. You dont want a sailboat so why buy a motorboat that panders to a sailboat. Just stick with a sailboat or bite deeply into the darkside and realise the only thing in common is they both float. The rest of the dried boolocks you're being fed is utter nonsense. Forget what you know and go find something you like and hopefully that will conform to what 90% of the other Mobo-ists like because that way you know your opinions havent led you up a dark channel known as Shit Creek and financial deficit. Or at the very least financial deficit that a healthy spoonful of ManMath cant absolve.

Shaft drives
Good safe walk aroundside decks and forward access
Port and starboard access wheelhouse /helmsation if poss
Minimum canvas to attend to
Minimum cruising speed 16 kts to cope with local conditions
forward facing helm station seats for at least 3 inc Helm!
Two heads
Nimbus or similar Nothern Hemisphere offerings
Except Botnia Targa, which are damm good boats but bloody dear and have outdrives
Do what they say on the tin but cramped accomadation for their size
Aquastar, Dale (rokin horse doo daas and above budget probably) Nelson types
Beneteau 'Trawler' types?
Go on their Forum amd chek out the bits falling off and maintenance issues!
Semi displacement with a decent range is where I would pitch my search
Peeps go on about fuel costs
Its not the major issue we think it is
SO Much other ongoing costs with any kinda boat
The 'average' hours most pleasure boaters do is suprisingly low
Will you hit 150 hours per annum?
Oh! just completed a small delivery trip (55miles ish) in an Azimut 40 , first time I had helmed one
Handled quite nicely in a bit of a chop
Quite liked it
Just some thoughts for you Birdseye
Does seem a sellers market at the mo though!

What? No Channel Island 25 in the offing. You have mellowed out with age.

One thing I should ask. For a family crew, what weather and tide conditions are the real life limit for say a 30ft mobo. I dont mean survival conditions but ones which make for a happy passage for swmbo. 15kn? following tide?

Depends entirely on what mobo!

I think you may well be pleasantly surprised at the capability of a Mobo. They are not as fragile as you may think coming from a yottie stand point and blue water boats. We are often out in weather the yotties steer clear of.

But a following sea makes for a smooth ride and a short period small wave is a lot nastier than bigger ones with an acceptable period.

you judge

Semi Displacement, twin engines, shaft drive for an ex raggie covers the sea keeping, comfort, options to travel at economic speeds or get a wiggle on if needed. Aquastar,Nelson,Seaward,Lochin or similar
would be ideal for the discerning.

Not forgetting the Mitchell 31 Mk4, a proper boat! there was also a company who made altered versions of the Offshore 105, i think they were called procharter, you could buy diy versions or completed hulls with choice of twins or single, i think they went bust though, but very good SD hulls.

That’s cos it doesn’t exist. A 22 or a 32, both of which I’ve owned, do exist and are exceptionally good boats.

I should be flogged publicly for that gross error of education. Kwakkers drummed it in enough times. No doubt I will get it in the ear from our local sage when he next comes pontoon bashing.

Hard to find both of these but the Kent 33 and Halvorsen 32 both have island doubles in the forecabin. Some Aquastar 33 & 38's can have the same depending on layout. You mentioned Wife and Caravan so it might be a consideration. Personally I think the Kent 33 is a belter!

The CI32's and Mitchell 31's are a fair bit narrower won't have the island double, great boats however.
