The bunks on our Neptunian are like laying on a thin layer of foam on a plywood surface, not very confortable; not surprising because that is exactly how they are made. I have suggested to SWMBO that I get a couple of blond nymphets but she has said no!

Have you any serious suggestions for a better nights sleep on board?

Re: Comfitable bunks

Someone on the Forum makes up Tempur mattresses at a good rate.

They have been very well spoken of here.

New modern foam makes a lot of difference. I replaced my rear cabin bunks with new firm foam and it now shows up how hard the berths in the saloon are! - they are next on the list.

All sorts of options depending on how much you want to spend.

Different densities (qualities) of foam are available.
Do not confuse this with varying levels of firmness and softness which is also available, but not the same as density. Also different thicknesses of foam - 4" being standard, 5" or more being luxury. You can even have two types of foam laminated together, such as 2" memory foam laminated on top of 2" of regular foam. You could also consider substituting your solid layer of plywood for slats.

If your upholstery is getting on a bit, the foam could be worn out and not providing sufficient support. You can replace the foam only, or the foam and the covers, if the covers are also worn out.

If the upholstery is in good nick, you might like to try putting a 2" layer of memory foam on top of the existing mattress.

Just installed IKEA slats on the saloon berth - very comfy - and only a tenner! May well do the forecabin berths.

Just in the process of giving minee a make over. I couldn't afford a full set of new foams but am giving the important berths a boost with an extra 1 inch of foam (£20 for an 10 by 8 sheet) Add to that a layer of wadding on the top and things are feeling much nicer

You should wrap the whole lot in stockinette now to keep all the layers in place. Do your old covers still fit now you've added a layer of foam and a layer of wadding to the existing foam?

Hope you made sure it was fire retardant foam. Cheaper foams, intended for packaging, are available, but are a very real potential hazard on a boat if not FR.

/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif We bought a Memory Foam Matress Topper, 3" thick,on Ebay, for our boat.
BIG problem!!! We now spend too much time in bed!!!zzzzzzz. Get one ,you wont regret it. And you can easily cut it to shape with an electric bread knife if you wish.

We have a memory foam topper as well as the £10 Ikea slats. The slats make the biggest difference and the bed is now more comfortable than the one at home!

You can get a King Size 1" Memory Foam Mattress Topper on Ebay for under £45 - this is enough for two bunks and will make a huge difference.

The stuff off Ebay is excellent - we have a 2" topper on the bed at home and it is the most comfortable bed we have EVER slept in, while the 1" layer in our forepeak meant we slept comfortably the whole year we were away.

Don't pay a fortune for memory foam - you don't need to.
