SAVING THE CANALS
In 1967 the Treasury was planning to save money by shutting down publicly-owned canals. Barbara Castle managed to extricate the canal network from their fate by minimising closures on the 1,400 mile network, whilst offering the rest of the network the prospect of a new start by reclassifying it into commercial and leisure categories.
The Bill, she told the Commons, offered: ‘new hope for those who love and use our canals, whether for cruising, angling or just walking on the towpath, or who want to see stretches of canal in some of our unlovely built up areas, developed as centres of beauty or fun.’

The rejuvenation of the canal system over the last 50 years or so - largely by the superhuman efforts of volunteers - bears testament to what can be achieved if people who care put their minds to it.

Yes I saw that programme as well.Goes to show what the awkward sods who dug their heels in preserved for the rest of us.

Just goes to show how someone usually pilloried was actually very good in her role. Perhaps history will be a little kinder to her now.....
Good program btw....

Also responsible against the "Clarksons" of the day for bringing in the Breathaliser ? and the resulting dramatic reduction of DD deaths.
Anybody remember who bought in legislation for seat belts, again fought tooth and nail by motoring lobby.
A 50 mph limit on all roads should be the next step.? :)

Toby Jessel MP for Twickenham was a very strong advocate for seat belt legislation. ISTR as a result of a family tragedy.
