combination lock

hi all
i found a locked padlock the other day on the boat ( 3 numbers )
origin unknown
all ideas welcome on how to unlock it

If it's a cheepo you will find that putting tension on the hasp and then rotating the numbers, you will often feel resistance and then easung just as each number gets top the required one. If its a decent lock take it to a locksmith - I did that with one a couple of years ago and it took him 2 mins to open it. Wouldnt tell me how though.

Set it 0-0-0
Then sequentially 0-0-1, 0-0-2 etc
Then 0-1-0, 0-1-1 etc
Then 0-2-0, 0-2-1 etc

If you have to go to 9-9-9 it should only take 20 mins

Some combination locks have sufficient gap between the discs for you to see the spindle (a small torch will help). Rotate the first tumbler until you see a flat on the spindle. Rotate each of the other tumblers until the flats are aligned and then rotate the tumblers together until the lock opens.
