Dear Friends,

I promised to update you with any news of S/Y COLROS and her skipper, David Cartwright. We received word yesterday morning from the Suffolk police to say that Colros has been found drifting in the mid-Atlantic. David was not on board.

Colros was spotted by the crew of a "super yacht" two days ago (May 30th) about 600 nautical miles SW of the Azores; they contacted the authorities who asked them to board her - two crewmembers did - and they picked up David's log and passport, which they will hand over to the Gibraltar police when they arrive there around June 5th. They left Colros drifting (apparently that's all they could do) and presumably she'll make landfall at some point.

David's last entry in the log was January 8th when he was about 180 miles west of Lisbon, putting him right on course / on time for Madeira.
The police did not have any details about what the log says, but stated that (from the report received) there was apparently nothing significant in the log which might help explain David's disappearance. We assume he fell overboard, obviously the result of some kind of accident - a fall or a sudden squall. The police are investigating and I think we'll know the most likely scenario pretty soon.

Colros has apparently sustained some damage to the mast, but she's upright and nothing about her suggests a capsizing. Her sails are a bit tattered but that's understandable as she's drifted for four months and a total of 420 miles from the last logbook entry.

David’s family would be very grateful if word could be passed around in the sailing community that we would very much like to recover Colros and David's personal possesions, if possible.

I am sorry to be the bearer of such sad news. We draw enormous comfort from the fact that David was happy living his dream when he left us.

A very sad ending and not the one we all wanted, though i agree that I am sure it is a relief to finally receive some sort of closure and the family can begin to regain some level of normality /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Thank you for letting us know

I have followed this for weeks and hoped all would be well- I couldn't contribute anything worthwhile except silent prayers.

Now, I am so distressed by this this news as to be in tears.

For what it's worth my thoughts and prayers are with you..

God bless you and yours.

Thanks for the update, however sad. I'm so pleased that at least the boat is found and that you have closure at this awful time for Davids relatives

May he rest in peace

Dear Barbara

As sad as it is, thank you for the update.

I've never been capable of saying the right thing at the right time, so please bear with me here....

David lived his dream and David died living his dream. Like David has done, I hope that when my time is up, I go whilst living my dream; simply because I cannot think of anything worse that enduring endless years of a debilitating or degenerative condition. That, to me, is a cruel waste of precious life.

Despite his fate, David is an inspiration for me to get back out there and to live my dream.

Rest in peace.

Very sorry to hear David has not been found. I hope you, his family and friends will have an appropriate celebration of David's life and achievements in due course. You should all be very proud that he had the courage to set out on this major challenge. Thank you for sharing your story with us.

RIP David.

I'm pleased that you have found definite news, but so sorry that it is so bad. My sympathies to you, and all of David's friends and family. I hope it is some comfort that he was "living his dream" (to use a trite phrase), with the rewards and risks that , as an experienced sailor, he must have been only too aware of, and accepted before he began his voyage.

I raise my glass to him, and to those he leaves behind.

Andy.

Barbara, very sorry to read this news. I hope that the certainty it brings enables David's family and friends to regain some equilibrium and start to move forwards again. So sad.

Hi Barabra

I have followed this but posted nothing but willed that it would end in good news. It's one of the posts that leaves an empty feeling in your stomach even if you did not know the person involved. I can only agree with all the other posts here. The only certainty in life is that we all go one day and I too hope when my turn arrives it is doing something I love.

I was given this by a friend following the tragic death of one of my close friends and always found it a comfort. For what its worth I post it here.

On the road that all must tread
You have travlled on ahead
Out into the morning light
Out of reach and out of sight
But never very far away
for every night and every day
On the wings of memory
Something brings you back to me
Some simple and familiar thing
Will start my heart remembering
The times we had, the good the bad
The days, the years, sweet things and sad
A tune, a joke, a cup of tea
Something brings you back to me

I always think of the following verse as fitting. It has always helped me to thinki that, in some way, we might all meet our loved ones again.

I am standing on the sea shore,
A ship sails in the morning breeze and starts for the ocean.
She is an object of beauty and I stand watching her
Till at last she fades on the horizon and someone at my side says:
"She is gone."

Gone!

Where?

Gone from my sight - that is all.
She is just as large in the masts, hull and spars as she was when I saw her
And just as able to bear her load of living freight to its destination.
The diminished size and total loss of sight is in me,
not in her.

And just at the moment when someone at my side says,
"She is gone",
There are others who are watching her coming, and other voices take up a glad shout:
"There she comes"

That is dying. An horizon and just the limit of our sight.
