Know Your Rules of the Road

A lighthearted quiz to help improve and test your knowledge of the collision regulations

Q. Your new sail on your racing dinghy seems to be worth the money as you lead your class upto the first mark. Trouble is the Conservancy passenger vessel Solar Heritage is right in you racing line.

You know that as the overtaking boat you do not have the right of way – but it’s not often you’re in front. What shall you do?

Any takers, before I post the answer given?

Overtake but keep well clear: Who knows what rules anyone who uses comic sans is following but they clearly have little awareness of anything around them

Edit: Darn! She's gone and taken the funny bit out of the original post...

The answer :

A. The Skipper of Solar Heritage, who is also a racing sailor, sees your angst and moves out of your racing line out of courtesy despite not being required to do so under the Col Regs. He's only required to maintain his course and speed.

A smile and a friendly wave of thanks as you pass and everyone is happy (despite you nearly losing grip of the mainsheet as you wave and dropping two positions!)

Collision Investigation

A collision occurred in the harbour Saturday 11 May 2013 between a sailing dinghy flying an asymmetric spinnaker and a yacht. An investigation of the incident found that the dinghy sailor was not keeping a proper lookout as required by the International Regulations for the Preventing Collisions at Sea (Rule 5).

Failure to keep a proper lookout is a common factor in many incidents in the harbour and all mariners are reminded of this fundamental requirement.

Low clewed and long footed sails impede vision and extra vigilance is required when using them.

The thing is, if you haven't predicted the actions of the tripper boat, you may look like you're in the lead, but you are not really in the lead unless you are well placed to finish first accounting for all obstacles.

I was right then.
