Colregs clarification...

This can happen on the roads as well, except you only see their jaw flapping about and spittle appearing on their windscreen or whatever.

A cheerful smile and a friendly wave will always raise their blood pressure a bit further and hopefully hasten their departure from the gene pool.

So many charter boats in the Solent (including mine!) so always check whether boat has 2 horseshoe buoys and danbuoy.

If it has assume its an occassional charter skipper that may be less knowledgible of col regs than ideal.

I recommend you shout back "Starboard tack - close hauled we are stand on boat" otherwise people will never learn.

Its always a difficult call but I always try to keep to col regs but keep well clear ,not to interfere, with racing and give way if necessary to inexperienced skippers

We just politely point out that our boat is 18 tons of concrete, and they are welcome to try ramming us if they like... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I tend to agree, if the boats are converging at 90 deg then overtaking is not it. The reaching boat (A) would have the close hauled boat (B) on its port side (where it would be difficult to see) making (A) the stand on vessel. The close hauled boat (B) would have the other vessel (A) on its starboard side (and clearly visible) and so would have to tack to starboard avoid it astern. Unless I have misunderstood the situation . . . . . .

anyway we all learned a new word

Giving way to starboard only applies to two powerboats. Between 2 sailing boats it's not that simple, and the reaching boat would be the windward boat, and the give way vessel.

Perhaps he thought you were motor-sailing?

You hadn't forgotten to take down your cone, had you? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Or perhaps he had reason to believe you WERE motor-sailing and were therefore the give-way vessel?
And should have had a cone up.
