Colour of lines on yachts

I've asked this before but can't remember the answer. You have lots of different colour lines on sailing boats which have different uses. Is there a universal code of which colour rope does which job, so that anyone getting on a yacht for the first time as crew, knows exactly which line does what ?

Did that make sense ?

Any colours you like

That would be too easy.

Each does their own thing, using whatever colours are available, tasteful or cheapest.

For simplicity I keep everything in white.

no specific coding in use that is standard. however some boat owners keep different colours for different jobs as a help for inexperienced crew - thus "grab the port yellow rope" /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

[MADFISH]

A kind of standard that is fairly universal on racing boats is:

White - Main halyard and mainsheet
blue - Genoa halyard and genoa sheets
red - Spinnaker halyard and sheets
green - Spinnaker guys and spare halyard
yellow - pole topping lift

This does not cover everything but is kind of the norm on a new boat.

As Talbot says, there is no specific coding.

Its not a girlie thing either, like decorating a house -

SHEETS from Laura Ashley to match the curtains, and all that ...... !!

Madfish had the colours right - these colours seem to be standard on modern UK made boats
