the Challenge boats are going westwards at 13knots or so, the vendee globe eastwards at 17knots or so, and then ellen will come whamming through the middle at 20knots or more, all possibly at night whilst having a kip, and nobody having had a good kip for several weeks...

I admire the single handed long distance sailors, but cant help feeling that their approach to our sport is just a tad unseamanlike The thought of the speeds some of these boats are doing without any lookout, brings a direct comparison to fishing boats!

Oi! Knock it off about fishing boats, all of the fisherman that I know are a consciencious, hardworking bunch. I'm sure that there are some rogues but no more than the number of incompetant leisure sailors one sees from time to time.

During our sponsorship of the Ultra 30 Series a few years ago, I spent a number of hours in the bar with Laurie Smith, the Round the World skipper (who was also the skipper of our boat "Frontera"), and he had some hair raising stories to tell about the Southern Ocean. The biggest collision problem was at night and with ice bergs. Creaming along at 20+ knots in pitch darkness, not knowing if there was such an object dead ahead was mindblowing. Doesn't bear thinking about too much.....

You are right.
I am not going to think about it.

not to mention huge numbers of containers floating awash and going round and round the southern ocean until the walls rust through. ask conrad humphreys.

Sounds rather like the Southern Ocean is taking over from the Solent.. Do you think the Challenge boats will be able to post COLREGS queries here and rant about 60mph Multihulls refusing to alter course?

Re: Dont worry

The RAN are very experienced at finding yachties in the southern ocean.. they just wish all the round the worlds were via Suez and Panama
