I'm surprised not to see this here yet: this morning before dawn, two IMOCAs competing in the Route du Rhum, Ari Huusela/Ariel2 & Sébastien Destremau/Alcatraz It FaceOcéan, collided mid-Atlantic. Luckily no injuries and only minor damage, both are continuing to race.

Here's the article on the Route du Rhum site. And here's Huusela's description on Facebook.

Evidently Destremau was in bed at the time, sailing on autopilot at 12-17 knots. Huusela's radar proximity alarm went off but he failed to raise Destremau on VHF and by the time he went on deck it was too late to avoid the collision. Huusela was on starboard tack ;) .

Eh, you posted this same incident at midday on the Race Forum:confused:

All reported on the Official Race Website and thankfully no injuries, or worse.

Lots of people don't read that forum ...I've only just discovered it

I think it's a good point to raise in a wider forum

Certainly I would be upset if I was down by a yacht whilst the skipper was asleep, one thing is 3or 4 knots but carreaing At 17 knots is stretching safety limits

Going out on deck first might have been a better idea.
