Having just asked Lemain for the brand and name of his cold galvanising zinc spray, I popped to the big supermarket down the road, (Pavi in Qormi, Malta), where they have a big hardware section, and what did I find...

Brand: Ma Fra
Name: Zinky
What: Cold Zinc Spray

&

Brand: Ma Fra
Name: All Defend
What: Anti corrosion and humidity protection wax.

Looks like my nuts and studs need never get rusty again /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I did my Delta with zinc spray when it was beginning to rust after many years of constant use. I was pleasantly surprised at the result, it lasted well for the first season and now that the anchor has been demoted to 'spare' status, has suffered no more deterioration.

Cannot advise the make, it was bought in Corsica.

The Gods were smiling on you.....No excuses now are there for stuck nuts and rusty bolts!!!!!!!!

Sounds perfect. Many people poo poo cold galvanising - and without doubt it won't be as good as hot dipped galvanising -- it is really excellent stuff and looks good, too. Worked well for me on that last 12" of chain by the anchor that always seems to suffer from tired galvanising first. Mine lasted a whole season of anchoring, and still looks good!

The secret for zinc rich paint sprays (thats what they are) is zinc content. You need about 90% plus zinc in the dry film after the paint cures.
If its not enough then the electrolytic protection effect is much reduced by way of the zinc particles not being in electrical contact with each other, due to the paint resin insulating them from each other. Unless this conductivity exists, then the protection is much reduced.

Of course if a whole item, such as an anchor, or chain has worn out galvanizing (it does wear, its sacrifical after all), then the item could be re-galvanizied.

The way to tell how much zinc is in a paint, is to check the weight. In broad terms if the can doesn't feel extraordinarily heavy, don't buy it. Many have aluminium mixed in to give brightness. But in most marine applications brightness is an issue to last only days, so go for zinc content.

I have always used a locally made product called 'Hempel Galvacoat'. I imagine that you can also find it in the UK. It is a paint that is very zinc rich and you can tell by the weight of the tin - VERY heavy.

The spray galv the pro's use is galvafroid.
You can get a zinc galvanising spray from screwfix, £2.93 for 400ml

Two very good brands are Galvafroid and Zinga.
Galvafroid is dark grey, so not good to match / repair galvanizing, as it shows. But good stuff anyway. Zinga is perhaps the best.
