Cold winter forecast

Mixed messages

1. A Met Office spokesman said it was too early to predict exact temperatures for the winter - because it's more than a week away, and the Gulf Stream hasn't changed direction yet.

2. but they were expected to be "significantly colder than average". - Which average, 100 years, 50 years or by inference, the last few 'fairly mild' years.

3. "Considering we have had a run of fairly mild winters, we issued the warning to energy companies as there was a concern that they might get caught out with their current supplies," he said. - You can bet the energy companies knew we have had a few mild ones, and were planning for an ordinary winter anyway.

Re: crap journalist alert

um, anything that variously quotes "scientists" is always suspect - the clear implication being that the writer has not the slightest clue about anything scientific - they're in a different and strange grouping of people from those with whom he or she is familiar.

The same writer Roya Nikkhah also wrote in July that average temperatures are increasing due to increased activity on the surface of the sun. But of course, if he wrote a single article based on all th reasearch he'd have one so-so balanced article instead of two highly syndicatable (?) and shockworthy pieces.

A more balanced outlook would be that the weather for next year will be much like the recent previous years, bit of snow, bit of rain usual stuff. The general news will also be a bit like the previous years with the usual suspects winning general elections (and not the nazis) and sportswise, the more expensive professional teams will generally beat the skinter teams.

Mostly everything is going to be fine, altho of course, individually a few crap things might happen bhut you'cve gotta balance these with some nicer things.
