Cold Weather Sailing togs!

For style on the piste, the Norfolk jacket and plus fours, added to cross-country skis, takes some beating. Once shared a chalet with a Royal Marine apparently telemark turns are much easier without the rifle getting in the way.

The bu*ger NEVER fell over.

Musto gear is great - although from my experience it only lasts 20 years using it most weekends and for annual cruises. Buy the best you can afford. Many is the time I've been the only one warm snug and dry and that included some in their bunks.

Breathable is best

These are useful on the yacht and around town. Just what you need when customs or the navy want to board.

A wooly bear suit with a wind and shower proof layer on top. Brilliant - can add thermals underneath and oilies/salopettes on top as required. Bought cheap at Southampton years ago.

Also buffies with fleeces, and we have a huge assortment of fleece and wooly hats. Gloves - the key problems are the wrist length, and hands getting wet on the wheel. We have a layering system for extreme situations - with the thing gloves you buy for working with mucky substances at the bottom, then good fleece, then either marigolds or thick gardening gloves. This sounds very cumbersome but it works a treat when you're hacking around the channel and thames estuary in January.

or you can do what weve done and sail south to the Med!

Can't fool me, you're Bill Bryson using a pseudonym!

It's often been remarked on, particularly because I work in the Book industry. Sadly I am not Bill Bryson and I don't possess his bank account, although I am wittier, more handsome and erudite - and younger. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Thermal underwear, long jons and long sleeved . Trousers. Micro fleece top, then heavy, thick fleece top. Go for man made fibres, avoid cotton or wool, it will get damp then cold with perspiration, yes you WILL perspire!

Make sure you have a balaclava on plus a microfibre hat, pulled down over the ears.

Top all that with good foul weather gear, that will keep the wind out.

Sorry if you are to hot!
I hope you will all contribute. Winters are gone and summers have arrived. So whats your preparation it terms of clothing to tackle scotching heat
