Did not know that sgeir or skerry had any relation to the English "shore" - thank you for that.

Re the patronymic, are there circumstances where the matronymic is used or acceptable? I ask because I was once introduced to a woman with second name that was something like Margretsdóttir or Margretdóttir.

Sgeir; matronymics are relatively uncommon, but favoured by children getting back at a father who´s fled the nest, as its fairly easy to change your name or patronymic. Also sometimes used by single mums with a grudge! BTW, geneologists have a hard time of it here now, as the whole nation has been mapped out from the year dot for medical/genetic research and is accessible on the net - all that´s left is correcting the "fatherhoods of convenience".

Sgeir's still an excellent username!
