Every night about g & t time - 1700 ish - a large boat, by the sound of it, blows his horn 7 short and 1 long.
Guess its one of the ferries, but have never gone down the harbour to look.
What does that one mean??

could mean anything. Look in REEDS almanac, alot of harbours have their own special signals. there are quite a few at Harwich and Felixtowe.

It means "proceed to emergency/muster stations". Not normally a sound signal you expect to hear from an adjacent vessel.

Maybe he has to have a lifeboat drill every time he puts to sea?

Well it doesn't sound like one of the Harwich sound signals
Sound Signals Used by Vessels in the Area

One prolonged blast _____ I am leaving a dock, quay or anchorage
One short blast • I am altering my course to starboard
Two short blasts •• I am altering my course to port
Three short blasts ••• I am operating astern propulsion
At least five short blasts ••••• I am uncertain of your intentions or actions
Four short blasts followed by one short blasts •••• • I am turning short round to starboard
Four short blasts followed by two short blasts •••• •• I am turning short round to port

was on a brittany ferry last week. it was blowing 40 knots so i thought i'd read the safety instructions.

7 short + 1 long: muster at emergency stations.

4 long: abandon ship.

Was on the Mersey ferry on Sunday, see epic UK tour.

This was described in the safety briefing as assemble at muster stations or find the keys to the bar. They did not give an example though, seems a strange option by the old man of the boat you describe to actually carry out these blasts every day.

It is not often I can answer one of these, yee hah!

To all the learned members

Many thanks for the info.
It did not happen tonight for some reason. Maybe it is the phetheria? lots of them anyway, of cruise boats that just happen to have decided to have boat drills at g&t time recently.
