Col regs question. Who\'s in the right?

I sail and MOBO, but at the moment more MOBO, I need to ask, who is wrong?
This was passed to me!!!!

"I was enjoying this twenty-two knot passage from mt home port to wherever, when I came across this bunch of raggies, in a race acting as if they owned the bloody bit of sea I wish to travel in.........I came down in revs, a bit, but kept on course, I gave five blasts as they were oblivious to my presence as they kept tacking this way and that for no apparent reason at all. Then they had the cheek to verbally chastise me!!!!

They should all just stay in harbour, or bugger off out to sea and keep their racing away from commonly used passage lanes! We have more right to be on the water then they do as we pay more money to be there!"

What say you?

Obviously a troll, but why not?

Koolie's correspondent is in the wrong. Rule 18a applies, since the correspondent is proceeding under power and the raggies are clearly sailing vessels. The only way he could be in the right is if one or more of the sailing vessels was overtaking him (rule 13), but this seems unlikely.

Re: Col regs question. Who\'s in the right?

Tho' the sailing vessels are obliged to maintain course and speed so if one tacked in front of him onto a collision course it would be in the wrong.

Re: Col regs question. Who\'s in the right?

However, the Mobo could be reasonably expected to appreciate the movements of other users of the sea and take the prudent and seamanlike measure of avoiding a group of sailing vessels.

light the blue touch paper...

Unless it had to do so for navigational reasons rather than tactical ones

Re: Col regs question. Who\'s in the right?

Freestyle, not a troll by me, honest!

I had this passed to me and thought I'd share it.

Why do some MOBOer's act like this? I have the pleasure of doing either, whenever I wish, but why oh why act in this manner.

My Brother-in-law shared this with me. He has a sail school and just smiled at this sort of behavior. He doubt's it happened.

Anyway, I can understand the MOBOer's feelings, some 'Raggies' are arse holes. I have the right of way, you go around me!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't understand it?

Re: Col regs question. Who\'s in the right?

Absolutely right

Your only fault was slowing down and not ramming them.

Re: Col regs question. Who\'s in the right?

if your boat is bigger than theirs, more flashy and clearly you have more money, then of course they should get out of your way. They should also yell in gratitude that you slowed from 23kts to max displacement speed (makes big smooth waves instead of wee sharp ones) and disengaged the autopilot. If you flattened a few, they would also be getting sued for clogging up your cooling intakes.

Clearly they were upsetting your right to leisure and pleasure. Stick on a few more revs; weave your way through the fleet creating as much wake as possible.

Remebmer that when a Raggie is under power, and not sail, then he is also a MOBO, and as such we also get the frustrating behaviour of racing 'wind' sailors that you do.

There is no such excuse as 'We are racing' in colregs, if any so called racing sailor uses that one on you then call up Ch M1, or whatever, and report him. with his sail No to his race control. He will more than likely be disqualified, and not do it again /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Racing sailors are meant to observe Colregs first and sailing regs second.,

However it surely is incumbent on all of us to assist each other in enjoying the water that we have.

Elequently put!

Motoring my Seawych up Christchurch Harbour, I was faced with the prospect of dinghy racers continually crossing the navigatable channel I was in in their windward part of the race. My option was to stop in channel and wait for the race to finish, or the option I took, to cautiously continue at a few knots thinking that a bit of give and take would make common sense in such a situation. Boy, did I get an earful!

OK, I think he was out of order and not me, but guys like that will always be there regardless of rules. But I think the real blame lies with the sailing club's Race Officers. Laying your course across a buoyed channel is wrong. Putting this argument one stage further up, can you imagine a cruiser race where the organiser put the course through the shipping approach to Portsmouth?

Re: Col regs question. Who\'s in the right?

Now get this scenario..

I was returning to Chi Marina from Yarmouth against the wind, but with the tide. Motored all the way. As anyone will tell you that is still a long haul, over 6 hours.
When I arrived back, Chichester Yacht Club were involved in thier Family Race/Fun Week, whicj involved small sailing boats crossing the channel in front of me.
So I waited until they had crossed, before continuing towards the lock. Sod it, they had turned round a buoy and were coming across me again. We are taliking about some 12 boats in line astern here.

What would you lot have done? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

What the hell, I thought, so I just idled away and let them all cross infont of me again, why not? Life is too short.

I should add that I am a member and the Asst. Bosun as well, but what the hell, lifes too short. boating is about taking ones time.

IMO, if you can't take time, then you shouldn't be on a boat /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: Col regs question. Who\'s in the right?

Roll on the end of red diesel and those 22 knots will seem rather extravagant. Who knows, one day you might even see sense and buy a sailing boat

Re: Col regs question. Who\'s in the right?

Yes unfortunately, life is too short. BUT what really pisses me off about racing sailors is that they expect and demand that you get out of their way. No give and take with them. But this is going to degenerate into another racing v cruising post. Mobos wash pisses me off too.

You should know the response to someone you shouts "I'm racing" it's

"I'm racist" /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

When were these introduced then? Does this mean that no one else can have their boat anywhere on a straight line between two points in case someone is going from one to another. What does he think he's got steering for?

The man is obviously an ignorant arse who thinks the fact that he is "considerably richer than thou" gives him greater rights.

Re: oh hell............

I really wasn't going to get sucked in but --------

[/ QUOTE ]

please please understand that the extravagance would be in coming of the plane....... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif.......so of course the best answer here for everyone is to simple steer round the whole damm group giving a good clearance. The implications of the original were that this is out in open water so just use the wheel.

Last weekend I only saw one yacht out in open water, about a mile off Anvil Point - so breaking normal habits I passed within 800m to wave; and got one back!
