The Ors discussion had some value in that it enlightened some of us into the thoughts of a waterski boat driver.

IMHO most col reg discussions are pointless. You either know the rules or you dont, some of the replies will inevitably be inaccurate causing even more confusion.

A "Seamans Guide To the Rule of The Road" cost £9.99 .It has the rules printed in the back for reference. The front section is divided into self teach sections with a little self test at the end of each section.

By the time you reach the end you will have enough knowledge for A yachtmasters exam (The book was designed to help Royal Navy officers pass their exams).

Personally I need to look at it again now and then ,its surprising what you forget.

If you cant find it locally try Morgans Technical Books01454 261299

Whilst agreeing with you about how good that book is, no discussion on ROTR is a waste cause it gets people to think about the rules, an even occasionally re-read them if the interpretation on the forum is different from your own understanding.

BTW, there is a book about chartwork by the same organisation, that is very good as well.

The col regs went in and out of my head in the time it took to write the exam. I have no clue I avoid anything and everything that looks like hitting me. I have no problem and dont give a damn who is right and who is wrong I just turn to starboard or whichever way will avoid a collision. I dont do things by halves I turn in a big way so that my intentions are obvious. So far I have hit nothing.

id like to get the chartwork one .What is it called exactly ?I would think its "A Seamans Guide To Chartwork"?

The many (yawn) daft and often pointless contributions to the so frequently posted Col Reg posts bore the tits off of me....

Some of the disscussions have been laughable. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

a wardroom is often peppered with tricky questions re the colregs, and the subsequent discussion is often lively ..... and no doubt a good way to test/learn the finer points of the colregs - somwhat similiar to the discussions on here. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
trouble is you cant just kick someone in the bollocks on here if they are being intransigent , awkward and stupid ....... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Book is called "An Introduction to Coastal Navigation - A Seamans Guide"

Published by Morgan's Technical Books Ltd, PO Box 5, Wotton-under-edge, Gloucester

ISBN: 0 948254 02 5

Cant tell you the price cause mine is quite old

Absolutely. Everyone has a point of view. No-one will change their own interpretation and it degenerates into an endless "did" "didn't" playground argument. Whatever your opinion, if it comes to a court of law, you'll find out who was right.
I agree with Das Boot here.

well his policy of altering for everything is not correct, and I wont bother to tell you why ....... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

however years ago, when stcw was coming in, an old and bold captain had to get upgraded from a cert of service to a cert of competancy ..... in his orals with the dot examiner (not some yottie chap - or are they governmental examiners as well) he said the same thing as das boot, failed and ended up with no cert and no job ....... he had to sit the whole examination process from the beginning as the examiner thought he was a complete pillock...... and in fact so do I /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

in his defense the old and bold stated 'he had been doing that for x years and hadnt hit anything yet' umm - yes .... but haw many near misses did he cause ? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

this would be a good substitute though

I however passed the so called exam. I just dont care who is right and who is wrong. What he hell is the point of col regs if you are the only one who knows them.

Got to agree. All the rest, demanding they are the stand on vessel, swerving at the last moment. All sure they are in the right.

Show your intentions early

This thread again shows how pointless Col Regs discussions are because it is itself getting no-where.

Let's all agree to disagree.

you will find thet the overwhelming majority do know them around this part of the world, and in busy waterways ppl who dont follow them cause chaos

It may be one step forward and two steps back but some progress has been made. I haven't read the "Power always gives way to sail" recently.

The discussions also serve as a reminder that there will be plenty of people on the water who do the wrong thing, absolutely convinced that they are in the right..

100+ posts every time the subject comes up is a bit tedious but at least it's a sign that lots of people are interested.

It is like driving in India you do the test get the license....then hit the road. Well if you stand on ceremoney you will be mince meat in half an hour. Look in your book stick to the rules stay on the correct side of the road. I dont think so if you dont go with the flow you would be history. Screaming I was in the right as they cut you from the car.

one needs a lobotomy to drive in india, I have also been there (but normally sat in a rickshaw not actually played russian roulette) ....... however I beg to differ re the analogy between that and driving a boat.

Sorry about this, but when it comes to me against a ship I keep out of the way. I make it clear straight away that I don't want to play. I really can't recall a situation that would have caused confusion to the other vessel. Are you seriously suggesting that you should stand on against a crossing container carrying monster, when an early turn will signal your intention to pass astern without inconvenience?

There are situations where the col regs will provide consolation at an inquest.
